What have we learned over the past 3 years?

What is bird-building collision?

When a bird flies into a building at high speed and hits the building surface violently, usually leading to its death.

It is the largest source of urban bird mortality globally. Hotspots in Singapore include the Central Business District and the fringes of the Central and Western Catchment (NTU).

Building design affects the number of birds killed.

What can make a building a death trap for birds?

Water features

Stunned birds fall right into the water below. If they had not died from the impact, they now face death by drowning.

Large continuous glass surfaces

can easily appear like an open landscape rather than a building.

Double-glazed glass

is highly reflective and makes glass even more difficult to see.

Enclosed building shapes

are harder to navigate and trap more birds.

How can we prevent bird-building collisions?
